Launched in October 2000 with a US$ 210 million contribution to the University of Cambridge from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, the Gates Cambridge Scholarship Programme is the biggest single grant ever awarded to a UK university.

Full scholarships for full-time postgraduate study in any topic at the University of Cambridge are awarded to worthy overseas candidates. Of these scholarships, about two thirds will be awarded to PhD candidates; there will be roughly 25 prizes available in the US round and 55 in the worldwide round.

Courses in which Gates Cambridge Scholarships are not available include:

  • Graduate Course in Medicine (A101)
  • Any undergraduate degree, including a second BA or an undergraduate BA associated with another BA
  • MBA (Master of Business)
  • Doctorate in Business (BusD)
  • Non-degree courses
  • PGCE
  • MBBChir Clinical Studies
  • Part-time degrees
  • MFin, or Master of Finance
  • MD Doctor of Medicine degree (6 years, part-time)

Scholarship Coverage 

The following benefits are available to the Gates Cambridge Scholarship recipient:

  • The university composition fee assessed at the appropriate rate
  • For PhD researchers, a support payment for one student is offered for a maximum of four years. At the 2022–2023 rate, it costs £18,744 for a full year (pro rata for shorter courses).
  • The price of the incoming visa fees and the Immigration Health Surcharge
  • A single economy ticket good for both the beginning and end of the course
  • Money for the advancement of academia: You could be qualified for up to £2,000 in order to attend conferences and seminars, depending on how long you’ve been studying.
  • Fieldwork: You might be able to keep your usual maintenance pay while you are undertaking fieldwork for your PhD. The University Composition Fee should pay for additional fieldwork expenditures rather than the Trust.
  • The 2022–2023 family allowance is £10,944 for one child and £15,612 for two or more. No money is given to a partner
  • Money for hardship: for unforeseen difficulties the student encounters
  • Applying for maternity/paternity finance enables you to put your studies on hold for up to six months while still earning your maintenance allowance, should the need arise.

Requirements for the Gates Cambridge Scholarship

The candidate must fulfill the following requirements in order to be considered for the Gates Cambridge Scholarship:

  • Required Language: English 
  • Eligible Countries: All over the world 
  • A commitment to making other people’s lives better.
  • Outstanding academic standing.
  • The capacity to assume leadership.
  • Students must be nationals of countries other than the United Kingdom in order to pursue a full-time postgraduate degree.
  • You should be able to make a strong case at Cambridge for a certain postgraduate degree.

Application Process For Gates Cambridge Scholarship 

In the case that you would like to apply for the Gates Cambridge Scholarship, please do as follows:

  1. Apply for a course, a college place, and the Gates Cambridge part under the finance section.
  2. Register an account on the website.
  3. Enter your contact information here.
  4. Please provide these documents:
  • Gates Cambridge Statement Provide a brief (no more than 3000 characters, or around 500 words) statement outlining your reasons for applying for the Gates Cambridge Scholarship as well as how you meet the four main requirements.
  • CV/Resume 
  • Research proposal (only available to PhD applicants)
  • Gates reference: In addition to two academic references for admission, applicants to Gates Cambridge must submit a reference addressing their eligibility for the scholarship.
